In the beginning

On Monday we started our new assembly series which will focus on the Old Testament, journeying from creation to Moses and the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.

We started our journey in the first pages of the book of Genesis - in the beginning there was .....God.

A God who brought awe and wonder, order and purpose, diversity and creativity into being. We stopped for a moment to consider just how amazing creation is and how diverse and structured it is. We also paused to catch the awe and wonder of the fact that God created all of this to share with us and that God - the one whose hands threw stars into space - created us to have a relationship with him.

We then considered some of the characters that we would meet in our journey - Abraham the man who looked at the stars, Joseph and his multicoloured coat, Moses mother;  who risked all to save her child. Moses the man who encountered a burning bush and the command of God to respond to the cries of His people. All of these encountered God or saw God at work in their lives, all of them were part of God's purpose, rooted in God's original desire behind all creation. That we should have a personal relationship with Him.

It was a whistle stop tour, but it reminded us that all though characters in our story will change, the one thing that remains constant is God.

Our verse for this term is Psalm 18 v 2 which talks about God being our rock, our fortress and our protection. In the hard times and the good times, each of the characters we looked at on Monday discovered that this was true. That God was the rock in their lives, other things changed, but he never did and never does.

That in itself brought a final moment of awe and wonder as we lit our candle to reflect on the truth contained in this verse.
